Can’t believe it’s been 8 movies now since the very first Fast and the Furious movie came out. I can still remember the first race between O’Connor and Torreto: the roar of the engines, the cheesy lines, the long dialogues about family.
After 16 years, not much has changed. It’s still the same cheesy lines and the same long dialogues about family. What changed, though? Less street races, more explosions, more ridiculous car chases (or should I say, car and submarine chases *spoiler*), and (my favorite) more of The Rock (he’s already rebranded to Dwayne Johnson, FYI) and Jason Statham! That prison scene alone *spoiler* tells us how great of a pair they are onscreen (you’ll know what we are talking about once you see the film). Their banter feels natural, comedic but intense much like their personal equities.
As a stand-alone movie, it’s very entertaining. I already set myself up for ridiculous, over-the-top action scenes, and a “family-oriented” kind of movie, which they delivered. I didn’t even bother counting any more how many times they mentioned ‘family’. It’s what a Fast and Furious film should be about. I disagree. It’s called ‘Fast and the Furious’, not ‘The ultimate family movie’. I’m not looking for a great story (I am), or fantastic acting from the actors (I am. They’re some of the top-paid actors in Hollywood. Least they could do is earn their salaries.), I’m just there to be entertained, and they did that (Aren’t great stories and fantastic acting entertaining, though? I think they are.). How they addressed Paul Walker’s character and Mia’s was very subtle, too. They seem to be avoiding buzz around how they would pay tribute to one of their beloved characters (RIP Paul Walker). For the plot, I couldn’t say anything bad or good about it I could. The plot is the ultimate cliche in action movie history. Guy is living a quiet life. Enemy uses a loved one to blackmail guy. Guy is blackmailed into being a criminal but finds a way to get out of it and eventually save his friends and his loved one. The end. It is what it is. You don’t need to be a fan of the series to like this movie. Because you might not, if you were an actual fan. So, whether you’re new to the franchise or not, just have to sit back, relax and be entertained.
*Spoiler alert* Obviously, it’s not yet done. The ending was an obvious set up for the 9th installment. (They’ve actually already revealed release dates for the last 2 installments) I don’t know how they will continue with the franchise without being too repetitive. (Haven’t they already been too repetitive in the last 3-4 installments?) All I can say is bring on more The Rock and Jason Statham scenes! That I will agree with. Jason Statham!!!
PS: Pet Peeve: the title “Fate of the Furious” has nothing to do with the story! Who’s the furious who apparently suffered some special fate, here? I’m all for being witty but at least have some connection.
